All Over These Islands
we told the story
of the Rapa Nui people
on Easter Island
how they cut down
their last tree
to raise up false gods
we told it very often
so we must have
understood
Scotland
Spread your sheep’s lungs thick
over white skin and fall backwards
into the stagnant Clyde or thrashing Tay
climb out with a salmon in each pocket
and a brackish perfume in your hair
taste of schemes and white heather
catching in your throat like hope.
Spit on Tay Street or the Broomielaw,
the shape of your slavers tells your fortune.
